Awa’awapuhi Trail
Awaawapuhi Trail, Koke’e State Park, Kauai
Quick Stats
Length: 6.2 miles, out and back, round trip
Difficulty: Strenuous
Elevation Change: About 1,180 feet
Time Taken: About 4-6 hours, depending on how long you spend admiring the view of the Awaʻawapuhi and Nualolo Valleys overlooking the Pacific Ocean, taking photos, or stopping for breaks (or a picnic at the far end of the trail!)
One of the most iconic challenging trails at Koke’e State Park near Waimea Canyon is the Awa’awapuhi Trail, a bucket-list hike for many experienced hikers visiting the island.
The trail winds its way down through the forest reserve, where you can view a variety of native plants and try to spot native birds.
At the end of the trail is the dramatic payoff: sensational views over the Na Pali cliffs, the Awaʻawapuhi and Nualolo Valleys, and the Pacific Ocean.
The views are best on a clear day, but if it is socked in by clouds when you arrive, don’t despair. If you wait it out, the clouds may part, allowing you to enjoy the views better.
View the vistas safely from behind the safety railing: the drop if you lose your footing could be catastrophic.
The way back is very challenging because it is all uphill. Take breaks as necessary and bring trekking poles to assist with the descent and ascent.
The trailhead for the Awa’awapuhi Trail is located near a parking area by mile marker 17 along Koke’e Road (see map).
Start the hike early in the day for lower crowds (the parking lot only has room for about two dozen cars). Visibility usually tends to be better in the morning as well.
The Awa’awapuhi Trail can be slick and muddy in parts after rains, so go during or after a dry spell if possible.
