Helicopter Tour

Waimea Canyon Helicopter Tour

One of the most incredible ways to take in the magnificence of Waimea Canyon is to soar over it on a helicopter tour!

While there isn’t a specific Waimea Canyon helicopter tour, the canyon is definitely one of Kauai’s top attractions and every Kauai helicopter tour will usually include Waimea Canyon, conditions permitting.

On a helicopter tour of Waimea Canyon, you will be able to get a bird’s eye view of the spectacular ridges and buttes, and the vibrant red and green colors of the canyon.

You will also get the best view of the two-tiered Waipo’o Falls, which drops 800 feet to the canyon floor. Waipo’o Falls is the best known of the Waimea Canyon waterfalls, and is a dramatic sight when it is flowing well, usually in the winter and spring.

While you can see Waipo’o Falls from roadside lookouts along Waimea Canyon, those views are quite distant, since the waterfall is located on the far wall of the canyon.

If conditions allow, your pilot will cruise low over the canyon, allowing for unique up close photo ops.

Definitely a bucket list Kauai activity if you are up for the adventure!

Things to Know About a Waimea Canyon Helicopter Tour in Kauai

Did you know you can choose from a doors-on helicopter tour or a doors-off helicopter tour in Kauai?

A doors-off helicopter tour affords unobstructed views for photo-taking or shooting video. No glass between you and the stunning views of Waimea Canyon, the Na Pali Coast, Jurassic Park Falls and much more.

But doors-off helicopter tours have age restrictions and may be pricier.

A doors-on helicopter tour usually has expansive sightseeing glass windows so you can see the views just great, but the glass is not ideal for photos. Wear solid dark colors like black or navy, because light colors like white or yellow can reflect sunlight.

Kauai’s weather can be unpredictable, so if the helicopter tour is a bucket-list activity for you, book a flight early in your stay on the island so you have the chance to reschedule for another day if your original flight gets canceled for some reason.

Flying conditions are usually better in the morning, because the wind picks up as the day wears on and clouds roll in to obstruct views.

But light for photography is better in the afternoon, especially for the Waimea Canyon and the Na Pali Coast.

If you would rather take an airplane tour instead, that’s possible too — this popular flightseeing tour offers all window seats for unobstructed views!
