The Kukui Trail takes you from the canyon rim down to the Waimea River at the floor of Waimea Canyon and back for a memorable hiking experience in Kauai.
Among the most challenging trails in Waimea Canyon, the Kukui Trail should only be attempted by experienced hikers.
You’ll descend down the west side of Waimea Canyon and end at the Wiliwili Campsite on the floor of the canyon, where camping is available by permit.
The route is scenic and affords a different perspective of Waimea Canyon than viewing it from the roadside lookouts. On the way up, you will be looking at the canyon walls from below, framed against the blue of the sky.
There are benches along the way where you can sit for a bit. They have been places at especially scenic points. Look for Waialae Falls, and wild goats along the buttes and ridges!
The trailhead for the Kukui Trail is along Highway 550, approximately 0.75 mile past Mile Marker 8. This trailhead is also the starting point of the super short Iliau Nature Loop, one of the easiest hikes in Waimea Canyon.
Wear sun protection and bug spray, and carry an adequate supply of drinking water, because it can be hot and sunny. Wear hiking shoes with good grip because the trail can be loose dirt, prone to slipping.
You can walk as much of the trail as you think you can do: even going down 0.5 mile can be a memorable experience. Just remember that the way back is steeply uphill and hike within your limits.
