Best Waimea Canyon Sunrise Spots
The three best spots to view Waimea Canyon sunrises are:
1. Puu Hinahina Lookout
While the Waimea Canyon Lookout is the main overlook, for viewing the sunrise, your best bet is the Puu Hinahina Lookout which offers jaw-dropping cross-sectional views of the canyon!

2. Kalalau Lookout
If you favor the stunning beauty of the Na Pali coast, head to the Kalalau Lookout at mile marker 18, a quiet, ethereal spot to view the sun lifting over the canyon.

3. Canyon Trail to Waipo’o Falls
Not content with a roadside lookout, but wanting an early morning hike as well? The Canyon Trail to Waipo’o Falls ends at the top of the falls, a spectacular bird’s eye view of the glowing canyon at daybreak.
Tips for Waimea Canyon Sunrise Viewers
- Arrive early: Check sunrise time on Kauai and plan to be at your targeted spot at least 30 minutes before – the pre-dawn viewing is as spectacular as the actual sunrise.
- Layer up: Even in Hawaii, it often gets chilly, especially at that elevation and early morning.
- Bring a torch: Especially if you’re planning to hike!
- Drive carefully: Driving the Waimea Canyon Road in the dark requires careful navigation.
